Ways to Save

Cloth Diapers
_____________
When I got pregnant with Uriah, Gabriel and I talked about lots of different ways we could save money.. Getting hand-me-down clothes etc. My sister-in-law Rosa hand been cloth diapering her daughter Aimee for over a year and it had saved them a lot of money so we decided we would try it out. I didn't know very much about it then, all the different kinds and how to wash them.. It can be kind of overwhelming honestly. Anyway, we bought our first supply of them at a store called Along Comes A Baby in Bellingham, WA. They were called Econobum which are great if you can't afford to spend a whole lot on them. We spent $100 and had enough for him. At first, they didn't work because they were a bit big for Uriah.. Then we tried them when he was a little older and they fit but for some reason leaked quite a bit... So we went back to disposables. Then about 2 months ago I decided to give them a try again. They leaked once and a while but were a bit better.. I kind of gave up on these ones, but I know they work great for some people, and some babies just have different builds so you have to find what works for you. We actually use the inserts of the diapers as burp cloths now because Uriah spits up so much!
...Then I started researching a lot, A LOT. There are so many different kinds, brands, sizes, colors. WOW. I came across BumGenius and fell in love with the look and all the different colors and options of different types of cloth diapers they had.. We're not talking using pins to hold them on the baby, they're so easy! These are the ones we got. They're called pocket diapers. Uriah hasn't leaked once in these, okay maybe a couple times but it's because he was wearing it for way too long. Oops.
These diapers are amazing and thankfully when we got them they were having a buy 5 get one free sale! They're so easy and super cute too! I can't wait till it gets warm out so he can just sit around in his cute diaper butt all day :)
With these cloth diapers there's a washing routine that I go by (BumGenius recommended) and it's super simple. I will share it with you so you can get an idea.
1. Pull all the inserts out of the pocket in the diapers and throw both into the wash
2. Put on a COLD wash cycle (to rinse everything off)
3. When first wash is over pour 1-2 scoops of cloth diaper safe detergent and run a HOT cycle (on our machine we use the Hot/Cold cycle. Detergent is important, your diapers will last longer. If you use regular detergent it could ruin the absorbency of your diapers. We use BumGenius Detergent.
4. After the second cycle is done I usually do a third rinse just to be safe and get them extra clean.
5. Throw the inserts in the dryer and hang the liners.

With BumGenius they have a few different options.
3. One Size Organic ALL-In-ONE Snap closure (these are their newest diapers and they don't have any inserts. It's pretty much like a disposable but the inside is organic cotton. Super easy and very slim looking.) We have one of these and they're great as well.
4.  Multiple Sizes hook/loop closure (these are good if you want to buy xtra smalls for your new born or if if works better for you, you can buy specific sizes for your baby.)

There are lots out there, but I really love these and would recommend them to anyone. You save tons of money on diapers, aren't putting more disposables in land fills, and did I mention they're great for your baby's skin? Uriah hasn't had a diaper rash in these once and he used to get them a lot in disposables, and leaked ALL THE TIME in them too.
If you have any questions let me know. I've read a lot about cloth diapers in the past couple months and learned so much.. I will probably share more as we go too! Did I mention these will last for our other babies too? Yippee!
